I can’t believe we are in 2025, and I will be 40 this year! It hasn’t been a lifetime of bowling…but it certainly has been a lot of bowling lately in the past 5 years!
Practice yesterday (1/4/25) went well. I had been working on some foul line drills. Trying to correct an issue that has been causing me pain. Recently, two excellent bowlers (Dianne Wiencek and Sean Treasure) pointed out that I should keep my hand behind the ball (not on the side). Also, keep my wrist straight. Lately, what I had been doing was not giving the wrist support to push from behind. All the revs I had were being lost to the wrong spin right from the get go. Now that I am pushing from behind, my wrist is aching. I need to do some wrist exercises to make it stronger, and also make sure I’m not bending my wrist too much at release.
If I were to keep going with my hand on the side then at the front at release, the below effect seems to occur:

Keeping this in mind next practice may help my revs. Also, overall spin instead of losing inertia to inefficient hand position. Some bowlers even go beyond behind the ball, and crank up with fingerholes closer to body so they have more room to come around for the spin. Next time you’re bowling, watch for these bowlers! While a stronger hook isn’t necessary to strike, it can sometimes help with the delivery angle into the pocket.
